The Overlay model consists of a headend (equipment rack) delivering a small number of basic
channels (called SMATV) and the DIRECTV® receiver in the
apartment unit to offer digital programming. The headend will
help solve second and third outlet issues by providing
programming to all outlets. The headend will deliver a
selected channel lineup consisting of local off-air channels
along with the desired amount of satellite channels. The SMATV
system (Satellite Master Antenna Television) will be the basic
tier of programming. A sample SMATV channel lineup is shown

Sample Lifeline Package via Headend,
commonly called SMATV
The second tier offered would
be the DIRECTV® set top box in the tenant’s unit (L-Band,
DTH MDU). The tenant must subscribe to a minimum of the Total
Choice package. The overlay model gives the tenants a
choice of a lifeline package (SMATV) or everything that the
DIRECTV® set top (digital) has to offer including
pay-per-view, movies and sports. Also remember that the tenant
will receive the lifeline package on all outlets, giving them
programming throughout the apartment.
SAMPLE
The Overlay model is ideal for a
property that wishes to provide a basic “lifeline” package
with the rental of a unit. The property is invoiced by DIRECTV®.
The programming fee is for a core of channels like the one
listed above. The signal access fee is a maintenance charge.
Subtraction of ESPN lowers the monthly unit cost by $1.50.
